Dr. Joachim Froese is a contemporary Australian art photographer, academic, and educator. He is known for combining exceptional technical expertise across both historic and digital photographic processes with a deeply conceptual approach to his art.
Born in Montreal, Canada, in 1963, Froese grew up in Germany and migrated to Australia in 1991. Today, he splits his time, living and working between Brisbane and Berlin. He completed an undergraduate degree in Tasmania (1995/1996), a Master of Visual Arts from the Queensland College of Art (2001/2002), and a PhD in Art from RMIT University in Melbourne (2017).
His practice bridges analogue history and modern digital photography. He frequently utilizes smartphones or digital cameras for capture, manipulates the images digitally, and then outputs them using 19th-century historic processes such as salt printing.
Alongside his studio practice, Dr. Froese is an educator who has lectured in photography Griffith University, QUT, and the University of the Sunshine Coast, alongside guest lecturing in Germany. He serves as an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Queensland.
His work has been exhibited across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. His prints are held in major public institutions, including: National Gallery of Australia (NGA), National Portrait Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).
