Dorothy Izard was a Melbourne photographer from 1912 to around 1936. Born in 1882 in Brighton England, her family moved to Australia in 1894 to live in Mildura on the Murray River in the far north west of the state of Victoria.
Dorothy moved to Melbourne, studied art at the National Art School of Design between 1902 - 1906 and there met Ruth Hollick who was become her lifelong personal and professional partner.
Dorothy was mainly a landscape photographer although her practice reduced as Ruth Hollick's photographic work increased with Dorothy doing much of the printing and other associated studio work.
There's a good essay by Susan Robbins (x2 great niece of Dorothy Izard) on the Photoria web site - an amazing online resource that has brought into the light the participation of women at all levels of the Australian photographic industry across the 100 years, being from 1850 – 1950.
The photoria entry on Dorothy includes the essay and a collection of photographs copied from Harrington's Photographic Journal 1912. The photos are listed from Dorothy's recent trip to London and Europe, so possibly she returned to the UK around 1911/1912.
The essay also includes a photo of the group of Melbourne women photographers on one of their many camping trips, this time to Shoreham in Victoria. Dorothy Izard and Ruth Hollick made many car journeys into the Victorian and New South Wales countryside. they later journeyed to New Zealand (possibly in the 1930s) and in 1950 to the UK.
Dorothy died in 1972 aged 89, and Ruth Hollick died in 1977 aged 94.
