Sandy Edwards (born 1948) is a Sydney-based Australian photographer, recognized both for her documentary photography and her career as a curator, mentor, and advocate for photographic artists. Edwards began her photography career in the late 1970s, developing a narrative-driven style heavily rooted in documentary traditions, portraiture, and the arts. Her personal work frequently intersects with major social themes:
Early in her career, she co-founded the progressive collective Blatant Image (alongside Helen Grace, Victoria Middleton, and Lyn Silverman). Her work critically analyzed the media's representation of women and explored female sexual identity. Her documentary work has featured relationship-based portraits of Aboriginal communities, emphasizing trust, community, and shared humanity. Her imagery often captures the vulnerability, innocence, and fleeting nature of youth and time.
Major Works:
Paradise is a Place (1996/1997): Edwards, published as a book by Random House in collaboration with author Gillian Mears featuring black-and-white gelatin silver prints exploring childhood on the South Coast of New South Wales.
The CSR Photography Project (1978): A social-documentary commission alongside photographers like Max Dupain and Bill Henson. Edwards used sequential prints taken in a sugar refinery to highlight the monotony and social conditions of women’s labor.
Showing My Age (2020) & A Backwards Glance at Australian Feminism (2025): Recent retrospective exhibitions pulling from her personal archives, capturing her 1980s/90s portraits for The Age newspaper and her feminist photography.
Other Major Projects: Welcome to Brewarrina (1990), Indelible (2004), and commissions for the Parliament House Photography Commission (1986).
Beyond her own camera work, Edwards has worked within the arts community in Sydney:
Stills Gallery (1991–2017): She served as a curator and co-director at Sydney's renowned Stills Gallery for over 25 years, helping shape the careers of Australian photographers until its closure.
ARTHERE (Founded 2008): Conceived by Edwards as an independent consultancy, ARTHERE provides mentoring, portfolio editing, and exhibition production services assisting photographic artists navigate the art world.
Public Art Programs: Edwards served as the regular curator for the Australian Life public photography competition (part of Sydney's Art & About) and she curated the inaugural Photo Sydney sector at Sydney Contemporary.
