Half Light: Portraits from Black Australia is the exhibition catalogue from the 2008 exhibition held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). Curated by Hetti Perkins and Jonathan Jones, the gallery's then-curators of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, the exhibition explored the power of the photographic portrait in documenting and reclaiming Indigenous identity.
The exhibition was framed as a response to the historical use of photography as a tool for ethnographic classification. By showcasing works from the late 19th century through to the contemporary era, Half Light sought to shift the perspective from the colonial "gaze" to Indigenous self-representation.
The exhibition brought together a prestigious roster of 15 Indigenous photographers whose 140 work challenged stereotypes and asserted cultural sovereignty and included Tracey Moffat, Mervyn Bishop, Destiny Deacon, Brook Andrew, Ricky Maynard, Michael Riley and Genevieve Grieves.
